Areas of Practice

Vondra & Malott, PLC operates a general practice including, but not limited to, the following areas.

Criminal Defense

Our firm handles all aspects of state and federal criminal defense, including trials, appeals, post-conviction relief, and federal habeas petitions.  Attorneys in our firm have tried multiple jury trials in state and federal court, and have represented clients throughout Eastern Iowa.

Our firm provides comprehensive service with immigration matters.  Areas of focus include:

  • non-immigrant and immigrant visas
  • family and employer-based immigration (“green cards”)
  • deportation/removal cases (“immigration court”)
  • asylum and withholding of removal
  • special immigration laws relating to domestic violence and victims of crime
  • waivers of inadmissibility
  • deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA)
  • citizenship and naturalization
  • the defense of immigrants charged with criminal violations of state and federal laws
  • appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)

The relationship between criminal law and immigration law is complex.  Relatively minor crimes can result in permanent inadmissibility to the United States, or result in deportation of long term lawful permanent residents of the United States.  Consequently, it is essential that the client know the immigration consequences in deciding whether to go to trial, or to negotiate a plea bargain.  Our firm has successfully assisted hundreds of clients to maintain their immigration status, or their ability to adjust to lawful status.

Civil Rights

Our firm has successfully represented plaintiffs on a wide variety of constitutional tort cases in the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa.  We have primarily represented clients in the areas of police misconduct, employment discrimination, and deliberate indifference to medical need cases in federal court.
